Ensuring Rights, Identity & Inclusion

Empowering Migrant Women in Urban Slums

In 2022, Sakhi Sangini conducted a study on the living conditions of women labourers in Bhuj who have migrated here for work. We found them to be living in precarious conditions without any essential needs such as water, sanitation, electricity and proper housing. Lack of water and sanitation makes women extremely vulnerable in terms of their health and safety. Based on the finding, Sakhi Sangini began working to organise these migrant women into the Sangathan, to ensure they live a dignified life in Bhuj city. For this work we often collaborate with Urban Setu, a partner that has been working with migrant families over the last several years.

We aim to work on the wholistic safety of this group of women as well, and therefore all our safety focussed interventions are organised with migrant women as well. In addition, we organise general meetings with women to acquaint them about Sakhi Sangini’s work, do awareness with women on labour rights and workplace safety, etc.
